As part of the Paris-NUS partnership and the Gex programme, fifteen students from the English Studies Department of the Faculty of Society and Humanities will be embarking on an academic trip to the National University of Singapore (NUS). The programme provides students with an experiential learning experience. The purpose is to discover and create projects on sustainable urbanism in relation to culture, art and the environment.

A UPCité and NUS Collaboration on Innovative Teaching
In June 2024, students from the National University of Singapore travelled to UPCité, where they discovered the French capital through the arts, culture, diplomacy and social innovation. Now it is the turn for UPCité students to make the reverse journey next January. This two-week academic trip is the result of a strategic partnership between Université Paris Cité and NUS, which aims to offer a unique international learning experience and develop mobility.
The project run by Ariane Hudelet, professor in visual culture, film and television, was one of the projects selected as part of a call for projects under the ‘Paris-NUS’ partnership. With the collaboration of Catherine Marcangeli, lecturer in art and visual culture, and Abigail Lang, lecturer in American literature, the project called ‘Singapore: a Nexus of Nature, Culture, and the Arts’ focuses on sustainable urbanism and cultural identity in Singapore.
Immersion in the Garden City
Master’s students in English studies specialized in history, literature, linguistics, art and visual culture, as well as double Master’s students in English and film, will discover Singapore from a unique perspective. They will meet their Singaporean peers and take part in a wide range of activities, including visits to museums and the embassy, masterclasses, meetings with artists and immersive activities such as urban walks and traditional dance classes.
This apprenticeship beyond the walls of the classroom will allow them to analyse a city like Singapore, a true ‘Garden City’ where green spaces and modern architecture grow in harmony. In doing so, the students will each produce a creative project about the theme of the programme and inspired by their experience of the Singaporean urban scene.
