Procedures for internships

An internship is mandatory in some of the programs offered by the department, and an optional possibility in others. Please check the page on conditions by program and by year for more details.

Internships can be full time or part time. They sometimes give rise to compensation. If they do, the amount (from January 2026) is 4.50€ per hour. Compensation is mandatory for internships 44 days/308 hours or more. For shorter internships, the possibility of a compensation is to be discussed with the host institution.

The cumulative time dedicated by a student to internships in an academic year cannot exceed 924 hours.

Finding an internship

Consider visiting the Pôle de l’Orientation et de la Professionnalisation which can answer your questions, guide you in finding an internship or help you with the administrative formalities.

The choice of the internship is made in agreement with your program coordinator (“responsable d’année”), who acts as the academic supervisor (“enseignant-référent”) for the internship.

The search for an internship is the responsibility of the students, who must actively seek out companies, schools, researchers and professors.

You will find on this page the few internships offered at the Department of Linguistics: list of internship offers.

Preparing the internship contract

Any internship must be formalized by a “convention de stage”, a contract between the student, the University, and the institution where the internship will take place. More precisely, it will be signed by:

  • You
  • A representative of the University. This will be the director of the Department of linguistics (“UFR de linguistique”).
  • A representative of the host institution

Other people involved in the process are:

  • The academic supervisor (“enseignant référent”). This will be your teaching program coordinator (“responsable d’année”)
  • The internship tutor (“tuteur de stage”), the person in the host institution who will be in charge of organizing your work and collaborating with you.

The process for establishing that contract is the following.

  1. Create and fill in the convention using  ESUP-Stage
    • Useful documents:
    • For internships taking place in France, here is how to compute the number of hours of work:
      1. Use the following website to determine the number of working days (“jours ouvrés”) between your start and end date: http://www.joursouvres.fr/
      2. For a full time internship, count 7 hours per day, i.e. 35 hours for an ordinary week with 5 working days.
      3. For a part time internship, you probably agreed with the host institution on a number of jours per week. You must provide the result of the following calculation: (number of full time hours from start to end date)/35*number of hours per week.
      4. Here is an example. Your internship starts on March 2nd, 2025 and ends on May 29, 2026. There are 60 working days betweeen these two dates. It is a part time internship of 20 hours a week.
        60 working days * 7 hours = 420 hours full time
        (420/35)*20 = 240 hours
    • Before starting to request signatures, you need to validate the creation of your convention on  ESUP-Stage, and email to Saïda Brinis at the office of student affairs (saida.brinis@u-paris.fr) who will check that everything is correct.
  2. Once all information has been confirmed to be correct, download the convention from ESUP-Stage, date it,  and have it signed by, in that order:
    1. yourself
    2. your academic supervisor (“enseignant référent”), who is the same person as the coordinator of your program and year
    3. in the host institution, by your tutor (“tuteur de stage”) as well as whoever has authority to sign for the institution.

NB: In the case of internships taking place in a research lab of Université Paris Cité, the host institution is Université Paris Cité, and the lab’s director signs for the institution. For instance, for an internship at LLF, Heather Burnett is the signatory. Sophie Lempérière  (slemperi@linguist.univ-paris-diderot.fr) is the relevant administrative contact person in case compensation is offered to you. The information to be filled in is then the following:
      Nom : UNIVERSITE PARIS CITE
Adresse : 85 boulevard Saint Germain 75006 PARIS FRANCE
      N° Siret/UAI : 13002573700011

  3. Send the signed convention to the Department office of student affairs (saida.brinis@u-paris.fr), accompanied by proof of health insurance (“attestation de sécurité sociale”) and liability insurance (“attestation d’assurance responsabilité civile”)
  4. The office of student affairs has the convention signed by the director, approves it in  ESUP-Stage, and sends it back to you.
  5. Send one copy of the convention to your contact in the host institution.

The internship can not start before all parties have signed the convention. Drafting the convention should be started early enough so that all signatures can be collected in time.

Proof of health and liability insurance are also mandatory to start the internship.

Wrapping up the internship

In most situations, compulsory internships in the department are not graded, but they still need to be formally validated. You need to have your tutor in the host institution fill in this form, and send it via email to the office of student affairs (saida.brinis@u-paris.fr) as well as your program coordinator.

BEWARE: the year of study will not be passed until the form has been received by the office of student affairs. If the internship ends late in the summer, you are advised to have the form filled in June, and not wait for the end of the internship.

Once the internship is over, please fill in the internship evaluation form available in through your account on ESUP-Stage.
